Australia relaxes visa rules for Indian students


India upgraded to be lesser risk country for Higher Education Sector

Australian Minister for immigration and citizenship, Chris Bowen, and the minister of Tertiary Education, Senator Chris Evans, announced today a strategic review of the student visa program and package to measures to ease the pressure on the Australia’s multibillion dollar education export industry. Australia has, in last 12 months, seen a sharp decline in its multibillion dollar education export industry.

The student visa changes announced today focus largely on the financial requirements of obtaining the student visas from various countries. Indian students, considering pursuing bachelor degree, associate degree, graduate certificate, graduate diploma or masters by coursework in Australia, would now find it easier to meet the financial requirements as a result of India been upgraded as a lesser risk country for Higher Education Sector.

These new changes would mean that the students now need to demonstrate lesser funds in order to obtain the student visa for higher education sector. For all the student visa applications that would be lodged on or after April 1 2011, the students would need to show funds for only 2 years of their studies instead of the currently required 3 years. Moreover, such funds are required to be only 3 months old against 6 months old requirements as it is currently in place. The new law that comes into effect in April 2011 will allow the students to be sponsored by any individual against the current legal requirement that limits the sponsorship to applicant’s spouse, parents, siblings, grandparents and uncle or aunt meeting certain criterion.

Mr. Naresh Gulati, ceo of Oceanic Consultants, welcomed the move by Australian government and said “The changes announced today would help Australia regain its position as a more favorable destination amongst Indian students than its current levels. A large number of students, who wanted to study in Australia, considered other destinations just because they found the financial requirements for the Australian student visa far more stringent than those of other countries. This would change and we would see traffic to Australia increasing.”

The changes announced today also bring down the financial requirements for the student who prepay their boarding through the educational Institutions in Australia as the amount equivalent to the prepaid amount would be reduced from the required funds. These changes come in effect from 16 December 2010.

Mr. Gulati expressed his concern about the abuse by student visas by some students and agents alike. He said “It is unfortunate that some students and agents are using student visas as a means of back door entry to various countries. The desperation to go aboard amongst the youth has led to mushrooming of large number of unscrupulous agents who are looking at making quick buck at the cost of student and family’s future. The students and their families must look at choosing the right institutions and channels to pursue their higher education abroad. Students supporting fraudulent documentation or means would only make their future uncertain. They may just be closing their doors forever to going abroad”.

HOW WOULD THESE CHANGES BENEFIT INDIAN STUDENTS?

Indian students considering pursuing bachelor degree or higher in Australia would benefit from the proposed changes in the following manner:
Benefits from April 1, 2011
These changes would benefit the students who are considering undertaking bachelor degree, associate degree, graduate certificate, graduate diploma or masters by coursework in Australia:
- Students would need to show funds that are only 3 months old against the current requirements of 6 months old funds
- Students can be sponsored by any friends or relatives against the limited number of close relatives who can sponsor the students
- Students would need to show funds for 2 years instead of 3 years as required by current law

Other Benefits with immediate effect [applicable to all student visa applicants]

If the student pre pay the boarding fees to the educational institutions in Australia, the prepaid boarding fees will be deducted from the total amount of living costs that student must demonstrate towards living expenses in order to obtain the student visa.

Gokula Metropolis’s campaign steers Rickshaw drivers towards better health



Metropolis Healthcare Ltd, India’s only multi-national chain of diagnostic center, in association with A R D U (Auto Rickshaw Drivers Union) is organizing a one day free medical checkup camp for the auto rickshaw drivers in Bangalore who are associated with A R D U, in an effort to encourage them to lead a healthy life. The camp is scheduled to be held at the ARDU office in Gayathri Nagar on November 28th. This camp will be held for one day between 10 a.m till 2 p.m.

The campaign will promote occupational safety and heighten the awareness of the importance of physical well-being of the auto drivers. About 100 auto rickshaw drivers are expected to attend the camp. As part of the campaign Metropolis will issue stickers to be pasted in the auto. These stickers carry traffic safety messages such as ‘Do not smoke inside the taxi or at a petrol pump, do not use a cell phone at a petrol pump, do not wave your hand outside the taxi and do not litter inside the taxi.’

The free health check up will cover Random Sugar (for diabetes testing, but further tests need to be done for fool proof scrutiny), Hemoglobin, TC & DC (used for testing the reasons behind any prolonged weakness, fatigue, tiredness & infections), blood group, Height, Weight & BP.

Dr. Priya Murthy, Center Head Gokula Metropolis Clinical Laboratories, said that, the auto drivers are frequently exposed to constant noise that can have an adverse effect on their nervous system leading to fatigue and increased blood pressure. Besides the environment in which these drivers spend the majority of their time is polluted and dangerous, leading to severe stress. Most importantly, they are prone to accidents and most of them are not aware of their blood groups too. The Metropolis health campaign is aimed at addressing these occupational hazards of the auto drivers in Bangalore.

Women are looking for more security through marriage


On fall of International Day for the elimination of Violence against women this month, BharatMatrimony conducted a survey on the scenario of marriage and security among women across the country.

A week long survey which was conducted among both married and unmarried women revealed that 80% of the women believe that pre marriage counseling can help in minimizing cases of harassment after the marriage with over 5000 respondents. The survey which focused on whether marriage is making women secure illustrated that the married women feel more secured in life as well as at work place than the unmarried. In addition, they felt that marriage provided them the sense of security and a fence against work place harassments.

Further, 81% of participants agreed that education provides a sense of security and confidence which helps women to battle against different odds they face in everyday life. The survey further shows that, marriage in India is still looked at as a secured relationship which provides emotional security rather than financial security. Women’s outlook about marriage as undergone drastic change – they feel that financial security can not be achieved through marriage and further expressed that emotional connect is what they are looking at from marriage. Interestingly, 48% of participants agree that reason for women not speaking about the harassment post marriage is because of social embarrassments while 28% felt that family pressure is the main reason for them to ignore or accept it. The survey shows a raise in women power as it found that women are now becoming more confident about opposing any kind of domestic violence.

Frameboxx, IIFM get Rs 28 crore investment from private equity firm India Alternatives




Frameboxx Animations, India’s leading Animation and Visual Effects training institute which has recently tied up with the Indian Institute of Financial Management, has announced that private equity firm India Alternatives Investment Advisors Private Limited will be investing Rs 28 crore in the combined entity.

The investment follows the creation of a platform by way of a merger between Frameboxx Animations, an animation training firm, and the Indian Institute of Financial Management, which offers MBA programs and vocational training
in financial services. The PE firm would hold a significant minority stake in the combined entity which provides training and higher education courses including MBA, financial services as well as media and animation.

During the camp, teenagers between the ages of 14-16 years would be given the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to practice with the FC Bayern Munich coaches on the club’s official training ground, attend a match at Allianz Arena and meet football stars from FC Bayern Munich, many of them who represented Germany in the FIFA World Cup.
Bajaj Allianz has launched the selection process for this unique initiative in India wherein 6 teenagers will be selected. In Kerala, the search will take place in Cochin, Mallapuram, Trichur, Trivandrum, Kollam and Kottayam.

The Camp will comprise of the following activities:

 Practice with FC Bayern coaches: At the training sessions, the coaches will guide the participants in practicing different skills such as target shooting, ball juggling, precise passing etc.
 Meet FC Bayern stars: After the training session, an opportunity to meet some FC Bayern stars like Franck Ribéry, Arjen Robben, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Miroslav Klose and Thomas Müller.
 Allianz Arena tour: A guided tour through the Allianz Arena, one of the most modern football stadiums in Germany
 FC Bayern match: Watch a match at the Allianz Arena
 Sightseeing tour: Besides football activities, participants will see some famous sights of Munich
 5-on-5 tournament: On the last camp day, the youngsters will show what they have learned in a 5-on-5 tournament with mixed teams made up of all camp participants

Selection process
The search for the participants will begin at the school level where 10,000 students will be targeted across 6 cities of Kerala. In the first phase to be held from the 2nd to 9th September, 60 schools will be targeted in the state to spot the talent. The students selected from the schools will compete at a city and state level selection process to be judged by coaches and former players from the Kerala or Indian football team players. This will be held at Maharaja Stadium, Cochin.

One teenager will also be selected through an online contest which will invite contestants to share their passion for football through photographs.

ഓസ്‌ട്രേലിയ കുടിയേറ്റ നിയമം പരിഷ്‌കരിക്കുന്നു


തൊഴിലും വിദ്യാഭ്യാസവും തേടിയെത്തുന്നവരെ നിയന്ത്രിക്കാന്‍ ഓസ്‌ട്രേലിയന്‍ സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ കുടിയേറ്റ നിയമം പരിഷ്‌കരിക്കുന്നു. പുതിയ നിയമം ജൂലായ് ഒന്നു മുതല്‍ നടപ്പാകും. പ്രധാനമായും ഇന്ത്യന്‍ വിദ്യാര്‍ഥികളെ ലക്ഷ്യം വെച്ചാണ് പരിഷ്‌കാരം.

പാചകം, ഹെയര്‍ ഡ്രസ്സിങ്, സാമൂഹ്യക്ഷേമം എന്നീ മേഖലകളിലേക്ക് തൊഴില്‍ തേടിയെത്തുന്നവരില്‍ ഭൂരിഭാഗവും ഇന്ത്യക്കാരായിരുന്നു. ഇത്തരം മേഖലകളിലുള്ള കോഴ്‌സുകളില്‍ ചേരാനും ധാരാളം ഇന്ത്യക്കാര്‍ എത്താറുണ്ട്. രണ്ട് വര്‍ഷത്തെ പഠനത്തിന് ശേഷം പലരും ഓസ്‌ട്രേലിയയില്‍ സ്ഥിരതാമസത്തിനുള്ള വിസ ഉറപ്പാക്കുകയാണ് പതിവ്. ഓസ്‌ട്രേലിയയില്‍ സ്ഥിരതാമസത്തിനുള്ള വഴിയായാണ് പലരും ഇതിനെ പരിഗണിച്ചിരുന്നത്. ഇത് ഓസ്‌ട്രേലിയക്കാര്‍ക്കുള്ള തൊഴിലവസരങ്ങള്‍ കുറയ്ക്കുകയും പലപ്പോഴും ഇന്ത്യന്‍ വിദ്യാര്‍ഥികള്‍ക്ക് നേരെയുള്ള ആക്രമണത്തിനു നിമിത്തമാവുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.

കഴിഞ്ഞ ഫിബ്രവരി 9 മുതല്‍ സ്റ്റുഡന്റ്‌സ് വിസ ലഭിച്ചവര്‍ക്കും പുതിയ നിയമം ബാധകമാണ്. സാമൂഹികക്ഷേമം, പാചകം, മുടിവെട്ടല്‍ എന്നീ വിഭാഗങ്ങളിലെ കോഴ്‌സുകള്‍ തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തവര്‍ക്ക് സ്ഥിരതാമസത്തിനുള്ള വിസ ലഭിക്കില്ല. എന്നാല്‍ ഇതിന് മുമ്പ് വിസ നേടി പഠനം ആരംഭിച്ചവര്‍ക്ക് സ്ഥിരതാമസത്തിനായുള്ള അപേക്ഷനല്‍കുമെന്ന് ഓസ്‌ട്രേലിയന്‍ സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ വ്യക്തമാക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. 2012 ഡിസംബര്‍ 31 വരെ അപേക്ഷ സമര്‍പ്പിക്കാവുന്നതാണ്.

ചെറുകിട മേഖലയിലേക്ക് തൊഴില്‍ തേടിയെത്തുന്ന ഇന്ത്യക്കാരുള്‍പ്പെടെയുള്ളവര്‍ കുറഞ്ഞ വേതനത്തിന് തൊഴിലെടുക്കാന്‍ തയ്യാറാകുന്നത് ഓസ്‌ട്രേലിയന്‍ പൗരന്മാരുടെ തൊഴിലവസരങ്ങള്‍ കുറയ്ക്കുന്നതായി ഓസ്‌ട്രേലിയന്‍ കുടിയേറ്റ മന്ത്രാലയം വ്യക്തമാക്കി.

''പാചകം അടക്കമുള്ള കോഴ്‌സുകളിലേക്ക് തുടക്കത്തില്‍ ആവശ്യക്കാര്‍ ഏറെയായിരുന്നു. എന്നാല്‍ ഇത്തരം കോഴ്‌സുകളില്‍ ചേര്‍ന്നവരുടെ എണ്ണം വര്‍ധിച്ചതോടെ ജോലി കിട്ടാനുള്ള അവസരം കുറയുകയും ഇത് ആഭ്യന്തര പ്രശ്‌നങ്ങള്‍ക്കിടവരുത്തുകയും ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്'' - പ്രമുഖ കണ്‍സള്‍ട്ടന്‍സി ഏജന്‍സിയായ ഓഷ്യാനിക് കണ്‍സള്‍ട്ടന്‍സി ചീഫ് എക്‌സിക്യൂട്ടീവ് ഓഫീസര്‍ നരേഷ് ഗുലാത്തി പറഞ്ഞു.

എന്നാല്‍ ഉയര്‍ന്ന പ്രൊഫഷണല്‍ കോഴ്‌സുകള്‍ തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുന്നവര്‍ക്ക് ജോലി ഉറപ്പാണെന്നും അദ്ദേഹം സാക്ഷ്യപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു.
ഓസ്‌ട്രേലിയയില്‍ സ്ഥിര താമസമുറപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനായി കോഴ്‌സുകള്‍ തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുന്ന രീതി അവസാനിപ്പിക്കുമെന്ന് കുടിയേറ്റ വകുപ്പ് മന്ത്രി ക്രൈസ് ഇവാന്‍സ് നേരത്തെ തന്നെ വ്യക്തമാക്കിയിരിന്നു. അതേ സമയം, രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ പുരോഗതിക്ക് സഹായമാകുന്നവരുടെ സേവനം ഉറപ്പാക്കണമെന്നും അദ്ദേഹം ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു.

Dream Start 2011 awards over 35 complete course fee waivers for studying overseas

Cutchsoft Private Limited (Cutchsoft), the technology arm of Cutch Group, unveiled its new Windows-based Cheque Management application, Cheque Strategic Office Software (Cheque SOS) in Kochi today. Cheque SOS provides a comprehensive management function which includes cheque printing and aims to avoid preventable mismanagement of cheques. Cutchsoft is planning to expand its distribution network throughout India.

The software keeps master record of customer, statement of cheque book usage and bank account etc. The software allows the user to keep records and details of all bank accounts and the cheques issued using this software by default.

One of the unique features of the software is that it automatically converts the amount entered in numbers to words thereby eliminating the possibility of making any mistake. എറണാകുളത്തെ സ്വകാര്യസ്‌ഥാപനത്തില്‍ ഉദ്യോഗസ്‌ഥയായ സെറീന ഫുട്‌പാത്തിലൂടെ നടക്കുമ്പോഴാണ്‌ എതിരെ നടന്നുവന്ന മനുഷ്യന്‍ മന:പൂര്‍വം ദേഹത്ത്‌ സ്‌പര്‍ശിച്ചിട്ട്‌ ഒന്നുമറിയാത്തതുപോലെ നടന്നുപോയത്‌. സെറീന അയാളെ വെറുതെ വിട്ടില്ല. ഷര്‍ട്ടിന്റെ കോളറില്‍ പിടിച്ചുനിര്‍ത്തി ചോദ്യം ചെയ്‌തു. ആളുകള്‍ ചുറ്റുംകൂടി. മാധ്യമങ്ങളിലൂടെ വാര്‍ത്ത അറിഞ്ഞപ്പോള്‍ സെറീനയുടെ ധൈര്യത്തെ എല്ലാവരും വാഴ്‌ത്തി. സെറീനയെപ്പോലെ പ്രതികരിക്കാന്‍ ധൈര്യം കാണിച്ചാല്‍ ഒരു പുരുഷനും സ്‌ത്രീയെ ഉപദ്രവിക്കാന്‍ ധൈര്യം കാണിക്കില്ല. സെറീനയെ കുറ്റപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന സ്‌ത്രീവിദ്വേഷികളുണ്ടാകാം.

ഡപ്യൂട്ടി പോലീസ്‌ കമ്മീഷണര്‍ എച്ച്‌. നാഗരാജുവിന്റെ കോണ്‍ഫിഡന്‍ഷ്യല്‍ അസിസ്‌റ്റന്റായ പുഷ്‌കല ചില പോലീസുകാര്‍ക്കെതിരെ ഡി.സി.പി നടത്തിയ അന്വേഷണത്തിന്റെ വിവരം ചോര്‍ത്തി നല്‌കാത്തതിന്റെ പേരിലാണ്‌ പുഷ്‌കലയെ വീട്ടിലേക്ക്‌ ഗുണ്ടകളെ അയച്ച്‌ ഭീഷണിപ്പെടുത്തിയത്‌. ഫോണില്‍ വിളിക്കുക മാത്രമല്ല വീട്ടില്‍ വന്നും അവര്‍ ഭീഷണി തുടര്‍ന്നു. സ്‌ഥലമാറ്റം, ദേഹോപദ്രവം.... ഫോണിലൂടെ ഭീഷണികള്‍ തുടര്‍ന്നുകൊണ്ടേയിരുന്നു. ജോലിയില്‍ സത്യസന്ധത പുലര്‍ത്തിയതിന്‌ ഒരു പോലീസുകാരിക്ക്‌ ഉണ്ടായ അനുഭവം ഇതാണെങ്കില്‍ സാധാരണ സ്‌ത്രീകളുടെ കാര്യം പറയാനുണ്ടോ.

ബസില്‍വച്ച്‌ തന്നെ ഉപദ്രവിക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിച്ചവര്‍ക്കെതിരെ പരാതികൊടുത്ത കാലിക്കറ്റ്‌ സര്‍വകലാശാല ഉദ്യോഗസ്‌ഥ പി.ഇ. ഉഷയ്‌ക്ക് പിന്നീട്‌ നേരിടേണ്ടിവന്ന ദുരിതങ്ങള്‍ ഏറെയാണ്‌. നൂറുശതമാനം സാക്ഷരതനേടി എന്നഭിമാനിക്കുന്ന കേരളത്തിലാണ്‌ ഇത്തരത്തിലുള്ള സംഭവങ്ങള്‍ ഉണ്ടാകുന്നത്‌.

''ബസിലും ട്രെയിനിലും വച്ച്‌ തോണ്ടുന്നവരോട്‌ പ്രതികരിച്ചാല്‍ മാത്രമേ രക്ഷയുള്ളൂ. അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ അവര്‍ ഉപദ്രവം തുടര്‍ന്നുകൊണ്ടേയിരിക്കും.'' എറണാകുളത്ത്‌ ടെക്‌സ്റ്റയില്‍ ജീവനക്കാരിയായ ബിന്ദു.പലരും നാണക്കേട്‌ ഓര്‍ത്ത്‌ മിണ്ടാറില്ല. പണ്ട്‌ തോണ്ടലും മുട്ടലും മാത്രം പേടിച്ചാല്‍ മതിയായിരുന്നു. ഇപ്പോ അതിലും വലിയ പ്രശ്‌നമാണല്ലോ, മൊബൈല്‍ ഫോണ്‍. കോഴിക്കോട്‌ ഹോട്ടലിന്റെ ടോയ്‌ലറ്റില്‍ ഒളിക്യാമറ പിടിപ്പിച്ചതിനുശേഷം കടയില്‍ വരുന്ന സ്‌ത്രീകള്‍ക്ക്‌, ഡ്രസുകള്‍ ഇട്ടുനോക്കാന്‍പോലും പേടിയാണ്‌. വീടിന്‌ പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയാല്‍ പേടിക്കേണ്ട അവസ്‌ഥ എന്തൊരു കഷ്‌ടമാണിത്‌.'' ജീന തന്റെ വിഷമം മറച്ചുവയ്‌ക്കുന്നില്ല. ഓര്‍ക്കുക പ്രതികരിക്കുക മാത്രമാണ്‌ ഇതുപോലെയുളളവരില്‍ നിന്ന്‌ രക്ഷനേടാനുളള ഏകമാര്‍ഗം.

As part of this deal, Indian private equity firm ICICI Ventures has completely divested its holding in the company, which it had acquired in 2006. Scandic Food India Pvt Ltd to take Sil brand to 800 cities this year


Bangalore: Scandic Food India Private Limited is looking to rejuvenate the Sil brand by increasing its presence to 800 cities in this fiscal from the present 250. The Pune – based company bought the Sil brand from Marico Industries two years ago.

“The company is now taking to contract farming to steady the supply of fresh fruits and commodities like chilli, Tomatoes and other ingredients for its jams and ketchups. Scandic was looking to have a pan India presence during this fiscal for its juices, ketchups, jam and others. It will set up regional manufacturing plants in the agrarian belts. India will be the manufacturing hub for Southeast Asian countries and west Asia, “ said Ravi Chandra, National Head – Sales and Marketing, Scandic Food India Pvt Ltd..

The company recently launched a vegetarian mayonnaise to increase its product offering. It will now introduce a premium jam, which will be low on sugar, add a few variants of the existing products in three to four months apart from creating some new categories. Scandic has been setting up its own distribution channels for the past one year. The company recently launched fruit juices in five variants — apple, mango, pineapple and mixed fruit. It has recently launched two variants of tomato ketchup called Fun-mato and Hotmato.

Chandra said, “Scandic were increasing the efficiency and productivity at its Pune plant. The present capacity is about 2000 and 3000 tonne a month, varying with the product. Post upgradation, which will be complete this fiscal, the production capacity will double to 4000-6000 tonne a month. The company has already invested about Rs. 7 crore for improving the plant.”


The Sil brand will continue. Scandic plans to put in about 17 per cent of its revenues in promotional activities. Currently we are spending 8-10 crs with Carat Media to take the brand to the consumers. The jam and ketchup segments are estimated to be Rs. 140 crore and Rs. 400 crore respectively. There is scope for growth as the jam and ketchup markets are under penetrated, asserted Mr. Chandra.

Scandic Food India Private Limited

Good Food Group A/S acquired the SIL brand from the Indian company Marico Ltd. in March 2008, and subsequently the company Scandic Food India Private Limited was established, domiciled near Pune.

Under the SIL brand, Scandic Food India Private Limited sells its processed food products, comprising jams (mixed fruit), specialities (baked beans in tomato sauce, sweet corn cream soup), and sauces (soya sauce, green chilli sauce, red chilli sauce, mayonnaise).

The jam market is controlled by two national brands, and SIL has managed to hold its position for quite a long time, increasing its market share from 8 to 12% over the past few years.
